Kolozyan was born in Yerevan, Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (now Armenia), on February 21, 1909.
After graduating from high school, Babken Kolozyan continued his education at the Yerevan Art College (now State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia). There he studied in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He then entered the Imperial Academy of Arts (later known as Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture), in the studio of Professor A. Osmyorkin. He graduated from the Academy in 1938. The following year Babken Kolozyan moved to Yerevan.
In 1939 Kolozyan began teaching at the Yerevan Art College (now the State Academy of Fine Arts of Armenia). From the day of the foundation of the Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography in 1944, he joined its staff. Initially, he served as an associate professor and later was appointed the head of the painting department. He held his post until his retirement in 1972.
The last twenty years of his life Babken Kolozyan spent in the village of Saghmosavan, in the house he acquired in 1971. During his fruitful life, the artist managed to create more than 1,000 paintings, leaving a bright trace in the Armenian painting of the twentieth century. He was particularly known for his still lifes and landscapes. During his life, Kolozyan participated in dozens of exhibitions, including his solo ones in 1948, 1959, 1966, 1981, and 1989.
Babken Kolozyan became one of the most prolific Armenian artists of the 20th century. He was awarded the Medal "For Distinguished Labour" on June 27, 1956. Besides, he was named the Honored Artist of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1961.
Today, Kolozyan's works can be found at the National Gallery of Armenia, the History Museum of Armenia, the Art and Literature Museum, the Moscow State Museum of the Oriental Art, and private in collections.
