He had almost no regular schooling.
After his wanderings around the country, Baika became a reporter for Kokumin Shimbun ("The People's Newspaper"). At the urge of Rohan Koda, noted novelist, he published his poems in the Yomiuri Shimbun and the Miyako-no-Hana magazine (from 1889). He became a rival of Bimyosai Yamada, well-known poet of the time.
