(In Islands of Time, Becky Granger, the daughter of a prom...)
In Islands of Time, Becky Granger, the daughter of a prominent New York family visiting Maine for the summer, told her story about falling in love with Ben Bunker, an islander from a family of Maine fishermen. Now, in the sequel, Ben tells his side of the story. Ben’s account deepens our understanding of the characters and events in Islands of Time but stands as a compelling story on its own.

Barbara Kent Lawrence’s Bitter Ice: A Memoir of Love, Food, and Obsession is an account of her twenty-seven-year marriage to Tom, who suffered from eating disorders. Booklist reviewer Marlene Chamberlain said, "the toll it exacts from their life together and their relationships with others is the real story." When Barbara married Tom (a pseudonym), he was exhibiting signs of anorexia. He jogged daily and followed his runs with alternating ice baths and saunas. The title refers to Tom’s habit of chewing on ice chips to prevent hunger and take in fluid. He avoided drinking water for fear of bloating. He insisted that Lawrence eat less, even when she was pregnant. While Tom was hospitalized for psychiatric problems, he asked a doctor about anorexia and was told it was exclusively a women’s problem. As Tom grew more ill, he became dangerously thin but would also binge on forbidden food, like dry brownie mix, and then purge himself with laxatives. After Tom was caught stealing the meat from an employee’s sandwich, Lawrence was finally forced to acknowledge the extent of Tom’s problems. She insisted that he check himself into a clinic, where he was diagnosed as an alcoholic and anorexic. Tom’s obsessions caused a deterioration of relationships with the couple’s friends, family, and the staff of the real estate office the couple owned.
A Publishers Weekly reviewer said that the author’s focus "is on describing her own unhappiness and suffering, which was considerable, rather than shedding any light on anorexia, other than highlighting the symptoms." Lawrence discusses her contribution to Tom’s illness and the part her own dysfunctional childhood played in causing her to stay with him for the years before they finally divorced. Pamela A. Matthews wrote in Library Journal that "it is obvious that writing this book was an attempt to exorcise some leftover demons."
