Diana Sargeant is a menopausal anthropology professor whose hot flashes often produce insights into life, love, and what it means to be a woman. Diana belongs to a generation of A-list females: well-educated jet-setters who overcame their fear of flying in the fifties, became leftist protestors in the sixties, and were glamorous seductresses on birth control in the seventies. But in the eighties, they’re middle-aged matrons who are afraid of their own mortality and must come to terms with the fact that even though they obtained everything they desired, they’re still unfulfilled.

Barbara Raskin was born as Barbara Bellman on August 25, 1935, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After an early graduation from high school, Raskin went to college at sixteen and graduated from the University of Minnesota in two-and-a-half years. Raskin followed that with a master’s in English from the University of Chicago.
Raskin was a writer even in her youth and sold her first work to Seventeen magazine when she was twelve years old. After her graduation, Raskin worked a few years as a Delta Airlines flight attendant. She then taught at various universities as well as serving as a speechwriter for senators. The first book for which she received acclaim was Hot Flashes, a 1987 bestseller about the concerns of women who were part of Raskin’s generation and had grown up during the feminist era. The book dealt with three friends who mourn the early death of another friend who had been left by her husband for a younger woman. Hot Flashes struck a chord with women who had put their careers on hold to raise families while they watched their husbands climb the corporate ladder. The book was a the top of the sales charts for four months. Raskin’s other books, published prior to Hot Flashes, include Loose Ends, The National Anthem, and Out of Order. She was a busy freelance writer and contributed works to several magazines including Washingtonian, Washington Monthly, and the New Republic.
