Barbara Stenross was born on August 1, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, United States; the daughter of Fred Stenross and Gertrude Kuula (Maukonen) Stenross.
In 1968 Barbara Stenross received a Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University. Three years later she got a Master of Arts from Duke University. Barbara also holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Indiana University.
After her marriage, Stenross got a job teaching science and math at an elementary school for a year. Later, she went to work at Research Triangle Institute. Barbara came to Carolina in 1979 as one of the few women on the tenure track in the highly ranked sociology department. She was approaching 40, when sociology professor Richard Cramer suggested she might try advising. Barbara began on a part-time basis, working with students majoring in sociology, economics and industrial relations. She retired at 66.
In 1999 Stenross published her first and only book Missed Connections: Hard of Hearing in a Hearing World. She was also a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including Qualitative Sociology, Writing Sociology, and Journal of Contemporary Ethnography.
