Barbara Thayer-Bacon received a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University and Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Arts from San Diego State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Indiana University.
Barbara Thayer-Bacon began her career at Growing Concern as an elementary school teacher in 1981. In 1984 she was appointed as an elementary school teacher at Montessori Center School. From 1985 to 1987 Barbara was an elementary school teacher at Old Mission Montessori School. For a year she worked as a substitute teacher at Fort Wayne Community Schools, an adjunct faculty and a visiting lecturer at Purdue University and adjunct faculty at Ball State University. In 1991 Thayer-Bacon was assigned at Bowling Green State University where she worked till 2000.
Nowadays Barbara teaches graduate courses on philosophy and history of education and cultural diversity at the University of Tennessee. She is a coordinator for the Cultural Studies in Education masters and doctoral concentrations and editor-in-chief of the journal Studies in Philosophy and Education.
She authored over twenty-five chapters in essay collections and over seventy journal articles, published in professional journals such as The Journal of Thought, Educational Theory, Studies in Philosophy and Education, Inquiry, Educational Foundations, and others. Barbara has written six books and co-edited one with Lynda Stone and Katharine Sprecher. Her most recent book is Relational Ontologies, which was published in 2017.

Barbara Thayer-Bacon married Robert Allen Morrill in October 1972. They divorced in 1981. On December 20, 1986, she married Charles Samuel Bacon. Barbara has four children - Alex Jean Morrill, Thayer Stephen Morrill, Spencer Ray Morrill and Samuel Thayer-Bacon.
