Growing up poor in Texas, Curtis Jones learned at an early age the hard truths of racism. By the time he was fifteen, circumstances forced him to fend for himself, and he soon discovered that alcohol could act as a salve against the overwhelming fear and loneliness that dominated his life. Unexpectedly, a stint in the Marines gave him a tantalizing glimpse into the possibility of an equitable world. But once back in civilian life, the pressures and frustrations caused by the strictures imposed on the black man in a segregated society compelled him to turn once again to the comforting oblivion he found in a bottle. On the brink of succumbing to the terrible physical and emotional effects of drinking, fate brought him to a place that was truly colorblind. In the welcoming company of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, he discovered the unconditional love and support that would sustain him through the fight of his life. As Curtis Jones became stronger through his physical and spiritual rebirth, he became dedicated to the idea of helping others. After a hard-won struggle and with the help of friends, his dreams became a reality when he became a co-founder of Liberation House, a program that has assisted thousands of men of all races to find their path to recovery. From Segregation to Sobriety is a moving memoir that frankly examines the devastating impact that racism has on American society. It tells the inspirational story of how a once hopeless man became a shining beacon of motivation for other lost souls.
