(Gold, when wars break out or governments topple, takes fl...)
Gold, when wars break out or governments topple, takes flight. It cares not who possesses it or how it might be used. People, good and evil, assign it roles. It has the adaptability of a chameleon. It begets violence, plundering, looting, avarice, greed and even on occasion when right triumphs, gold can have served as a crutch. As international storm clouds gathered in the late '30s, gold of national treasuries and of individuals began to move. Sometimes it was by a careful plan, sometimes in panic, always in desperation. One country involved was Poland, and Operation Narcissus recounts a strange en-meshing of four American Army officers and a Free French lieutenant and the first girls they met in England - one had left her father to uncertain Fate when France fell before the German juggernaut, another who had grown up in the home of a British agent in whatever country missions sent him, one who helped recruit war correspondents to become qualified as paratroopers before the Normand airborne invasion, the daughter of a General, and a woman who was a Piccadilly commando who offered her favors nightly on a street corner.
