Sub-Lieutenant Royal Military College, Sandhurst, 1875. Joined 104th Bengal Fusiliers, 1876. Adjutant 2nd V.B. Scottish Rifles, 1887-1892.
Proceeded from India to South Africa in command of 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1901 (despatches, Queen's medal, three clasps, Companion of the Bath).
