Johnson was born in Hollywood, California, the eldest of three sons, actors Adam Johnson and Brad Johnson. His mother is the television hairstylist Charlene Johnson and he spent much of his early childhood on television sets.

He is currently recurring as Beau Berkhalter in The Client List on Lifetime. He is also currently starring to two Hallmark films this year: "The Christmas Spirit" and "Perfect on Paper". In the High School Musical films, Johnson plays the coach of the East High basketball team, who is also the father of its star player Troy Bolton (played by Zac Efron).
Johnson helmed as writer/director, an adventure comed short film shot on location in Baja Mexico.
