In this accessible yet provocative text Barry Hindess provides a new interpretation of concepts of power within Western social thought, from Hobbes' notion of "sovereign power" to Foucault's account of "government". This book will be welcomed as an important contemporary contribution to one of the key debates in social and political theory.

Hindess, Barry was born on July 11, 1939 in Hitchin, England, in the family of Henry Gordon and Mary Ann (Macbeth) Hindess.
Barry received Bachelor in Mathematics at Oxford (England) University in 1961. Then he got Master of Arts in Sociology at Liverpool (England) University in 1965, and Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology in 1975.
Barry was for many years an academic sociologist in the UK (mainly at the University of Liverpool) and has published widely on social and political theory, and on the history of political thought.
Hindess was one of the editors of Theoretical Practice which in the 1970s critically examined the Marxism of Louis Althusser. With other editors such as his former pupil, Paul Hirst, Tony Cutler, and Athar Hussain, this interrogation eventually undermined their original support for Althusser.
