Barry gamed an interest in photography from Creative Camera and Album magazines and their editor, Bill Jay. From 1967 to 1970 was the director of an exhibition for the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford. In 1970 he became a regional art officer for the council. He held this position until 1973.
Since 1973 Barry works as a photography officer with the Arts Council of Great Britain. At the Arts Council, he oversees photography publication and exhibition programs as well as grant programs for photographers, museums, galleries, and other organizations.
