Educated with Qadafi at Sebha School, he was a student teacher for a time. He linked up again with Qadafi at Military College, passing out together as officers in August 1965.
He was promoted to captain in August 1969 and took part in secret planning sessions for the coup which ousted the regime of King Idris on September 1, 1969. He was not very active for the first year of his chairmanship of the People’s Court but he made a go of it in August 1971 after surrendering his portfolio of Education and National Guidance which he held from January 1971.
He is frequently at Qadafi's side, accompanying him to military exercises as in October 1972 and to major political meetings such as the negotiations for union with Egypt in September 1972. An active special envoy, he visited Niger, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania and Upper Volta in September and October 1972 conveying messages from Qadafi and seeking to promote the spread of Islam.
