Excerpt from Memoirs and Correspondence of Coventry Patmore, Vol. 1 In the summer of 1891 I was staying at Hastings with Coventry Patmore. We went together to Rye, a town which had great charm for us both. While we were waiting at the station for the return train, he said to me that he had for some time past intended to ask me whether I should be willing to take charge of his papers and act as his literary executor after his death. He did not mention a biography, nor did I understand that this was included in the duties he wished me to undertake. I heard nothing further from him on the subject, and by his will he made Mrs. Patmore his sole literary executrix. Soon after his death, she requested me to write a memoir of him, I hesitated for many reasons. It seemed unlikely that I could command sufficient leisure from other occupations to do this adequately within a reasonable time; nor did I consider myself qualified for the task further than by a deep interest in Patmore's personality and work, and by an intimate friendship of long standing. I hoped however to be able at least to contribute to the memoir. Subsequently I found that it must be done, if at all, by me alone, with the assistance Mrs. Patmore was able to afford.
