Studied at Cheltenham College. Trinity College, Cambridge.
Joined 51st Light Infantry, 1872. Major, 1889; retired, 1894. Adjutant of regiment, 1879-1885.
On staff Quartermaster - General’s Department, India, 1885-1889. Served in Jowaki Expedition, 1877, as orderly officer to Brigade-General Doran (medal with clasp). In 1st Afghan War, 1878-1879, as Superintendent Army Signalling (despatches).
2nd Afghan War, 1879-1880, asadjutant to regiment (despatches, medal with clasp). Burmah War, 1885-1889, as Deputy-Assistant-Adjutant-General (despatches twice, medal with two clasps, Brevet Major, and Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Served with Yeomanry Cavalry in South Africa, 1900, in command of a regiment (medal, 3 clasps). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1887; Gentleman-at-arms; Justice of the Peace County of Suffolk.
