Background
Beilby Francis Alston was born on the eighth of October, 1868. He was the 2nd son of late Sir Francis Alston (Knight Commander of St. Michel and St. George, formerly of the Foreign Office). Most of his life he lived and worked in Beijing.

Beilby Francis Alston

In 1890 Beilby Francis Alston worked as a clerk in Foreign Office. In 1895 he was an acting 3rd Secretary in Diplomatic Service in Copenhagen. In 1896 Alston took up a post of a secretary to British Plenipotentiaries at Paris copyright Conference. From 1896 till 1897 he served as an Acting Second Secretary and Charge d’Affaires in Buenos Aires. In 1898, 1901 and 1902 Beilby Francis worked as a Secretary to British Representatives at Sugar Conferences in Brussels. In 1902 he was attached to Foreign Representatives at coronation of King Edward VII. In 1909 Alston was attached to Prince Tsai-shun of China on his mission to England. Moreover, in 1911 Beilby Alston was attached to Prince Tsai-chen, who was a representative of the Emperor of China at the coronation of King George V. In December, 1911 he was in attendance upon Prince and Princess Alexander of Teck at the coronation of King Vajiravudh of Siam in Bangkok. From 1911 till 1912 Alston was a Councillor of H.M. Legation and in 1913 he was a charge d'affaires in Beijing.

He was married to Hilda, who was a daughter of late Major-General Robert Green. Hilda and Beilby Francis' daughter and son were educated privately and abroad.
