Newton was drafted by Portuguese Adelaide with pick 35 in the 2010 National Draft. He made his American Federation of Labor-Congress debut against Greater Western Sydney in round 7 of the 2014 American Federation of Labor-Congress season. At the end of the 2014 season, Newton left Portuguese Adelaide citing that he wanted more opportunities at American Federation of Labor-Congress level He was subsequently recruited by Melbourne as a delisted free agent.
