A member of the noble Sorbian (West Slavic) Schirach family, he is a son of the author Richard von Schirach, a brother of the author Ariadne von Schirach, and a grandson of the politician Baldur von Schirach.

He also has American and English ancestry and descends from two signatories of the United States Declaration of Independence, and from the politician Henry Middleton. His first novel Becks letzter Sommer received widespread acclaim and was described by Die Zeit as "the most interesting debut of the year." His third novel Fast genial became a bestseller in Germany in 2011.
