Benjamín Cañas studied painting at the Fine Arts School of San Salvador and architecture at the National University in San Salvador. He also studied sculpture with Enrique Salaverria and Benjamin Saul, and ceramics with César Sermeño.
Benjamin Cañas was a painter whose works are greatly influenced by Surrealism. He often used juxtapositions of carefully modeled and cartoon-like figures to produce a whimsical and sometimes frightening atmosphere.
Cañas has exhibited his works in his native country and the United States.
He died in 1987 in Arlington, Virginia, United States.
