Benjamin Franklin Dwight was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.
He served an apprenticeship in architecture to the late George Snell. As draftsman he found employment with the late Arthur Gilman, and in his office designed a number of country homes. Following Mr. Gilman’s death in 1862 Mr. Dwight established his own office, and until the great fire of 1873 devastated the business section of Boston, he was active in planning and erecting both commercial and public buildings in the city. Perhaps the most important of these were the Eastern Express Building at the corner of Washington and Winter Streets; the old Selwyn Theatre; the Burnham Store on Washington Street, and several large Warehouses on Atlantic Avenue. In a later period he designed the Globe Theatre, Hotel Berkeley and the Hathaway Building, also several country and city residences. In addition he was architect of the Music Hall at Worcester, Mass., the Town Hall at Gloucester, and buildings for the Military Academy at Togus, Maine.
