He transferred to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature in 1962. Also, his Master of Arts in English Literature was completed in 1967 at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, United States.
Lifson was simultaneously teaching at Yale University and the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University in New York City, New York, the United States. He was a visiting instructor of photography at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1976 to 1977, and an instructor of photography at the California Institute of Arts in 1970-1974. Also, he served as a chairperson of its photographic program. Lifson was a senior photography critic at New York's Village Voice, with which he has been associated, in 1977.
