Benjamin William Mkapa is a Tanzanian politician , journalist , diplomat , who served as the third President of the United Republic of Tanzania (1995–2005) .

MKAPA, Benjamin was born on November 12, 1938 in Ndanda. Son of William Matwani and Stephania Nambanga.

Makerere University College.

Career

President 1974; founding Director Tanzania News Agency 1976. Minister of Foreign Affairs 1977-1980, of Information and Culture 1980-1982. High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to United States of America 1982-1984.

Minister of Foreign Affairs since 1984. Member of Parliament for Nanyumbu October since 1985.

Politics

Mkapa is actively involved in prevention of conflicts in the Great Lakes region in Africa , regional economic collaboration in the East African Community, in debt relief of the poorest African countries. He is known as a staunch opponent of economic globalization. Thanks to Benjamin Mkapa the role of Tanzania in the international arena has increased.
