A younger brother of Benjamin, Sir Isaac Pitman, was an English teacher who developed the most widely used system of shorthand, known now as Pitman shorthand.
Benjamin, was educated at his brother's school at Bath, later becoming an assistant there.
A younger brother of Sir Isaac Pitman was the creator of phonography.
In 1852 Pitman was sent by his brother to the United States to introduce the new phonography or Pitman shorthand system in this country. The following year he founded the Phonographic Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, of which he was president for many years. Benn Pitman invented the electrochemical process of relief engraving in 1855, and during the Civil War was the military recorder of state trials. He lectured on art and wood engraving at the Cincinnati Art School from 1873 to 1892. He wrote works on phonography and alphabetical reform and also a biography of his brother, Sir Isaac Pitman: His Life and Labors (1902).

Around 1849, he married Jane Bragg of Manchester.
Pitman's first wife, Jane, died in 1878. They had three children. He married Adelaide Nourse in 1881, and they had one child.
