(Excerpt from History of the Baptists of Texas: A Concise ...)
Excerpt from History of the Baptists of Texas: A Concise Narrative of the Baptist Denomination in Texas, From the Earliest Occupation of the Territory to the Close of the Year 1906, With a Copious Topical Index As faithful as he is capable of being, has been the author in the preparation of this volume. He has had before him constantly a great denomination of Christians, whose track way he has followed through four-fifths of a century. There have been struggles herculean, and victories resplendent; there have been periods of alternating darkness and light; there have been sacrifice and selfishness, order and dis order, wisdom, far-sightecl and exact, and errors, not a few. But out of it all has come a history of rare radiance, the recorded deeds of which will serve to stimulate through all the years of time. The darkness intermingled through these deeds make the bright only the brighter. Just as they have been found to exist, have the facts been recorded. The his torian has not made them, nor has he sought to modify them. A fact cannot be unmade. It remains such for all eternity. Fidelity to the truth has been the actuating motive of the author throughout. How well he has illus trated this principle, or how far short he has fallen, will be seen in these pages. Benjamin Franklin Riley, the son of Enoch and Sophronia (Autrey) Riley, was born on July 16, 1849 near Pineville, Alabama. His parents were poor but pious and ambitious for their son.
After receiving a preliminary education in the schools of his community, he entered Erskine College, Due West, South Carolina, in 1868, and graduated with the degree of A. B. in 1871.
He was converted while in Erskine and although he had intended to study law, was ordained to the Baptist ministry at Pineville in July 1872, and at once entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, then located at Greenville, South Carolina. His studies were soon interrupted by failing health and he returned home to recuperate.
In 1874 he entered Crozer Theological Seminary, where he continued until 1876. He accepted the pastorate of Carlowville and Snow Hill churches in his native state.
He was called to the church at Albany, Georgia, in 1878, but after a brief pastorate interrupted by ill health, he returned to Alabama and became pastor at Opelika (1879 - 82). In 1888 he was made president of Howard College near Birmingham, Alabama, remaining there until 1893, a period of great difficulty in the history of this institution. Resigning the presidency, he accepted the chair of English and oratory in the University of Georgia, which he held with distinction until 1900. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Houston, Texas, 1900-07, and from 1907 to 1909 was superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Texas.
His work with this society led him to see the deadly effects of the saloon upon the negro and inspired in him a deep sympathy for the colored man. Throughout his life, he constantly alternated between the practical and the scholarly.
While he was pastor he was also studying and writing, and while he was in educational work he continued to preach.
In 1881 he published The History of Conecuh County, Alabama. This was followed in 1888 by Alabama As It Is. Other historical writings of his include: History of the Baptists of Alabama (1893); History of the Baptists in the Southern States East of the Mississippi (1898), History of the Baptists of Texas (1907), Makers and Romance of Alabama History (1914), The Baptists in the Building of the Nation (1922), and Memorial History of the Baptists of Alabama (1923).
During his work as secretary of the Anti-Saloon League he wrote The White Man's Burden (1910).
He was also the author of The Life and Times of Booker T. Washington (1916). His works show diligence in research, care in statement, and vigor of style; they are, however, the works of a cultured but busy man rather than those of the finished scholar.
His later years were spent at Birmingham, Alabama, in quiet study, continuous writing, and frequent preaching and lecturing.
His most important work was in the field of education and authorship. He was a diligent writer, contributing constantly to the religious press of his denomination and to other similar periodicals. He will probably be best known for his contributions to the history of the Baptist denomination in Texas, Alabama, and the southeastern part of the United States.
