He was awarded the Medal of Honor, for extraordinary heroism on May 22, 1863, while serving as a Private with Company Doctorate, 116th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He died at the age of 78, on February 19, 1916, and was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Decatur, Illinois.
His Medal of Honor was issued on August 14, 1894. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Benjamin W. Schenck, United States Army, for gallantry in the charge of the volunteer storming party on 22 May 1863, while serving with Company Doctorate, 116th Illinois Infantry, in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
