He moved with his father to Clarke County, Alabama, and later resided at Demopolis, Alabama, in Marengo County. Between March 4, 1841, and March 3, 1843, he served as a Democrat in the Twenty-seventh Congress. In 1845, he was commissioned by President James K. Polk as United States Chargé d"Affaires to Venezuela.
He remained in this position until January 7, 1850.
He moved to Texas and engaged in planting until his death.
He completed preparatory studies and was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1834.
