Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Benjamin was born on February 19, 1833 in Barnet, Vermont, United States, brother of Henry Stevens, and tenth of the eleven children born to Henry and Candace (Salter) Stevens. His father, a descendant of Cyprian Stevens who emigrated to New England before 1671, was not only a farmer, postmaster, inn-keeper, and mill-owner, but a book-collector and antiquarian as well, founder and first president of the Vermont Historical Society.
After attending Peacham Academy and Newbury Seminary in 1853-54 he was a student at the University of Vermont.
Benjamin in 1850 was assistant state librarian of Vermont, in 1852 deputy secretary of state. In 1858-59 he worked in the Astor Library in New York City, where he acted also as an agent for Henry, then well established as a London bookseller. He sailed in 1860 to join Henry as partner, London being thereafter his home and bookselling his calling.
In 1864 he left Henry to join another brother, Simon, but left him in 1866 to set up for himself, and so continued until 1899, when he took Henry J. Brown as partner.
He was appointed United States dispatch agent, June 23, 1866, a post he filled until his death, which occurred at Surbiton, Surrey. This appointment brought him into contact with American diplomatic, consular, and naval officers passing through London and with many on the Continent.
Early in life he had begun to help his father copy and index documents in American archives (he had been sent to Albany, New York, at fourteen to copy manuscripts), and this interest he carried to England. There it led him to make an index in 180 manuscript volumes (now in the Library of Congress, Washington) to the manuscripts in foreign archives relating to America, 1763-83.
Between 1889 and 1895 he published twenty-four portfolios, B. F. Stevens's Facsimiles of Manuscripts in European Archives Relating to America, 1773-1783, with an index published in 1898.
He died at Surbiton, Surrey, England, on the 5 March 1902.
Though Benjamin Franklin Stevens took part in many business, social, and public activities, and was at his death recognized as one of the leading spirits in the American colony at London, he was first of all a bookman and antiquarian. As bookseller, acting as agent for many American libraries and private buyers, he became one of the familiar personalities of the London trade. He made extensive transcripts for the Library of Congress, the New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and New York Historical societies, and the New York Public Library.

Stevens was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1896.
On January 28, 1865 he married Charlotte, daughter of Charles Whittingham (1795 - 1876).
