Superintendent, Wetherfield (Connecticut) High School, 1773-1776. Appointed Lieutenant adjunct Connecticut Militia, 1776, captain, 1776, major, 1777, brevetted lieutenant colonel, 1873. Fought in battles of Brandywine, Long Island, Monmouth.

Captured Fort George, Long Island, New York, 1780. Officer in charge of taking custody of Major John Andre. Member United States House of Representatives (Federalist) from Connecticut, 7th-14th congresses, 1801-1817.
