Wells graduated from Harvard in 1877 and took his Doctor of Philosophy from Harvard in 1880. Afterwards, he studied for a while in Berlin.

He was a fellow of Johns Hopkins University. He worked at Providence, Rhode Island, from 1882 to 1887. From 1891 to 1898, he was professor of modern languages in the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee, then joined the editorial staff of The Churchman in New York City from 1899 to 1912.
