This work, so long announced, is at last completed. Begun tliree years ago, and at first interrupted by ill-health and other causes, for the last twenty months it has been the subject of continuous labour. When I undertook the task of compiling aG hnde to theL iterature of Botany within the compass of a few months, I much imderrated the magnitude of the task I had set myself to do. In common with most people, I believed Pritzel sT hesaurus to be practically complete to the end of 1871; I fancied therefore I had but to select from that storehouse, add the titles of such new books as had since appeared, and arrange the whole in the order of subjects. The delay in the issue of the present work is chiefly due to the unlookedfor heavy labour which was found necessary to produce a result which could be deemed satisfactory. The history of my work is as follows. Having agreed to compile a chtssified subject-index of short titles, I began by extracting from Pritzel such as I thought should be included. In order to attain the brevity necessary to compreds my subject within the limits of about two hundred pages, I decided to reject certain classes of works, unless some special reason should plead for their retention. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
