Began in mercantile business with father, at Hillsboro Bridge, New Hampshire (U.S.), 1852. Organized B. F. Dutton & Company, which was merged into wholesale firm of Dutton & Wyman, previous to Civil War. Later was member Brown & Dutton, burnt out at time of Boston fire.

Became member Houghton & Dutton, department store, 1871, incorporated, 1906, as Houghton & Dutton Company, of which is president
