Career

Admitted to New York bar, 1837. Master of chancery, commissioner Supreme Court, 1848. United States consul, Honolulu, Hawaii, 1853-1854.

Envoy of President Pierce to China, 1855, successfully settled dispute between American merchants and Chinese custom officials over exaction of import duties. Unsuccessful candidate from New York for United States House of Representatives. United States minister to Norway and Sweden, 1857-1861: president New York Agricultural Society, 1873-1874.
