Hutchison, Benjamin Franklin was born on February 12, 1868 in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. Son of Walter Raleigh and Sarah (Murphy) Hutchison.


Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1889.


Promoted ensign United States Navy, June 1891. Lieutenant, 1899; lieutenant commander, 1896. Commander, 1910; captain, August 6, 1915.

Midshipman on United States Ship Boston, until 1891. Served on Yorktown, Mohican, Petral, Detroit and again on Mohican until 1898. Service ashore on training stations, San Francisco and Norfolk, Virginia, United States Naval Academy, Naval War College, Navy Yard (New York), Hydrographic Office, Washington.

Administrator tanker floating equipment, New York and commandant Navy Yard, Norfolk, Virginia. Commander Kansas, 1917, Mississippi, 1918.
