Career

In practice at South Bend, Indiana, since 1886. Elected to 48th Congress, 1884, for unexpired term (1884-1885) of William H. Calkins, resigned. Reëlected to 50th, 51st and 52d Congresses (1887-1893), 13th Indiana District Democratic nominee for government of Indiana, 1896.

Received Democratic vote in Indiana Legislature, for United States senator, 1903, 05. Elected United States senator for term, 1909-1915. President trustees Indiana U., Bloomington.
