Benjamin Hodge was born in 1824 in Tennessee, United States. He was the son of John and Ann C. Lewis Hodge. Details of his early life are unknown.
Benjamin Hodge was a farmer, lawyer, and shopkeeper in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, before the Civil War. In November 1860, he signed a petition to arm the state militia, and as a delegate to the Louisiana secession convention, he voted for secession.
In 1861, he was an unsuccessful candidate for the state Senate. When the war began, he volunteered as a colonel in the Confederate Army and served until 1862, participating in many campaigns. In 1863, he ran fourth in a race for governor of Louisiana.
In February 1864, Hodge was named presiding judge of the military court of the Trans-Mississippi Department, but he relinquished the position a month later when he became a representative from Louisiana in the Confederate Congress. Hodge had no committee assignments, but he cast many votes and, unlike his predecessor.
Hodge was a member of the Whig Party. He supported the Davis administration.
On March 18, 1852, Benjamin married Caroline Dudley Cash. The couple had two children.
