Roberts, Benjamin Stone was born on November 18, 1810 in Manchester, Vermont, United States. Son of General Martin and Betsey (Stone) Roberts.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1835.

Career

Chief engineer Champlain & Ogdensburg R.R., 1839. Geologist New York State, 1841. Assisted in construction of railway in Russia from St. Petersburg to Moscow, 1842-1843.

Began practice of law, Des Moines, Iowa, 1843. Lieutenant colonel Iowa Militia, 1844-1846. Commissioned Lieutenant United States Army, 1846, captain, 1847.

Brevetted major for gallantry at Battle of Chapultepec, 1847, lieutenant colonel for gallantry near Matamoras, 1847. Received sword of honor from State of Iowa. Major 3d Cavalry, 1861, commanded Southern military district of New Mexico.

Active in battles at Fort Craig, Albuquerque, Valverde, Peralta. Brevetted colonel, 1862. Promoted brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1862, brigadier general, major general, 1865.

In command 1st Division, XIX Army Corps in Louisiana, 1864. Chief cavalry Department of Gulf, until 1865. Lieutenant colonel 3d Cavalry, 1866.

Served in New Mexico, 1867-1868. Professor tactics in military science Yale, 1868-1870. Retired from active service, 1870.

Practiced law and prosecution of claims before government, Washington, District of Columbia Author: Description of Newly Patented Solid Shot and Shells for Use in Rifled Ordnance, 1864. Lieutenant General United States Grant, an address delivered at Yale, 1864.
