Onderdonk, Benjamin Tredwell was born on July 15, 1791 in New York City. Son of Doctor John and Deborah (Ustick) Onderdonk.

Education

Graduate Columbia College, 1809.

Career

Ordained deacon Protestant Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s Chapel, New York City, 1812, priest, Trinity Church, New York City, 1813-1830. Secretary New York Dioceson Convention, 1816-1830. Professor ecclesiastical history General Theological Seminary, New York City, also professor nature, ministry and polity of church, 1821-1861.

Consecrated bishop New York in St. John’s Chapel, 1830. Tried on charge of immorality and impurity (1st trial of bishop ever held under Canons of Episcopal Church), 1844, suspended from office of bishop and from all functions of sacred ministry. Trustees of General Theological Seminary Did not remove him from professorship.

Various General Convs. were petitioned in effort to remove suspension, but not acted upon by time of his death.
