Miller was a graduate of New York University"s Tisch School of the Arts, in the Film program Miller began his film career directing the 1998 documentary The Cruise. As described by Wheeler Winston Dixon, the film documented the "tough life of a tour guide on a New York City bus", and was made using handheld digital cameras.
