Selassie was born in 1932 in Asmara, Eritrea.
Selassie graduated from the University of Perugia. He received a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Hull. Also Bereket was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of London.
Selassie began his career as an attorney general and associate justice of Ethiopia’s Supreme Court. Also he was a vice minister of interior and mayor of Harar. In 1964, Bereket resigned from the government out of dissatisfaction with Imperial policies. Then in 1966, he left Ethiopia, narrowly escaping capture by the military in order to join armed guerrillas fighting for Eritrean independence. After Selassie spending time on the battlefield, he left the war zone and became the representative of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front to the United Nations in New York City.
In 1994, he was appointed a chairman of Constitutional Commission of Eritrea, working with others to author the constitution until 1997. Bereket also served as a senior advisor on constitutional reform in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Iraq. He worked as Ethiopia’s attorney general in Emperor Haile Selassie’s government.
In addition, he taught at Howard University and Georgetown University. Then Bereket joined the faculty of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nowadays he is William E. Leuchtenburg Professor of African and Afro-American Studies at the same university. Selassie instructs at the University of North Carolina School of Law.
