(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Oxyrhynchus was the Greek name of an ancient Egyptian tow...)
Oxyrhynchus was the Greek name of an ancient Egyptian town when Rome ruled over the region. The site was thoroughly Hellenistic; that is, those who lived there were deeply influenced by Greek language and culture. Between 1896 and 1906, the ruins of Oxyrhynchus were excavated. The result was the greatest collection of papyri unearthed at a single location—the Oxyrhynchus Papyri. The papyri they found were of all sizes, some written by skilled scribes, others from semi-literate to utterly incomprehensible scrawls. They date from the first millennium of the Common Era, and a number of biblical fragments are counted among the findings. The papyri were excavated by two young classical scholars of Queen's College, Oxford—B. P. Grenfell and A. S. Hunt—who sorted and cataloged the collection. Included in it was a unique work called the "Sayings of Jesus" in seven fragments, each introduced with the phrase "Jesus says." They appear to be from the Gospel of Thomas and date from no later than 250 C.E. Grenfell and Hunt published two brief treatises on the Sayings; the latter, more expanded treatment of the two is presented here. The discoverers introduce the fragments with a Greek text, translation, and notes, as well as an account of their 1897 discovery. Each saying is analyzed in detail followed by general remarks about the collection as a whole. It is fascinating to read their conclusions prior to the discovery of the Gospel of Thomas, fifty years later. Since these fragments were uncovered, dozens of scholars had supplied articles and books about them. Grenfell and Hunt summarize these findings. They appended to this discovery another "lost" gospel fragment discovered in eight fragments. It represents a form of the gospel more closely related to the Synoptic type. The narrator speaks in the third person and presents a somewhat abbreviated form of the canonical accounts. These two works further demonstrate the number of traditions that circulated about Jesus during the early years of Christianity.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

The present volume contains the remainder of Lord Amherst scollection of Greek Papyri, including the classical fragments and non-literary documents, besides some additional theological fragments which had not been identified at the time of the publication of Part I. In editing the new classical fragments Professor Blass has, as usual, rendered us great assistance; and Mr. J. G. Smyly has made many valuable suggestions on the Ptolemaic texts. The facsimiles include many of the most important papyri, and serve to illustrate, by examples taken from each century, the whole period of nearly a thousand years during which Greek writing prevailed in Egypt. In response to several requests for a facsimile of the Letter from Rome (P art I, No. 3a) we have added a reproduction of that document in the present volume (P late XXV). BERNARD P. GRENFELL. (Excerpt from Sayings of Our Lord: From an Early Greek Pap...)
Excerpt from Sayings of Our Lord: From an Early Greek Papyrus Discovered and Edited, With Translation and Commentary On the edge of the Libyan desert, 120 miles south of Cairo, a series of low mounds, covered with Roman and early Arab pottery, marks the spot where stood the capital of the Oxyrhynchite nome. The wide area of the site, and the scale of the buildings and city walls, where traceable, testify to its past size and importance; but it declined rapidly after the Arab conquest, and its modern representative, Behnesa, is a mere hamlet. A flourishing city in Roman times, and one of the chief centres of early Christianity in Egypt, Oxyrhynchus offered a peculiarly attractive field for explorers who, like ourselves, make the recovery of Greek papyri, with all the manifold treasures they may bring, their principal aim. The result of our excavations there during the last winter, an account of which will be published in the next Archaeological Report of the Egypt Exploration Fund, amply justified our anticipations. The ancient cemetery, to which for various reasons the first three weeks' work was devoted, proved on the whole unproductive; but in the rubbish-heaps of the town were found large quantities of papyri, chiefly Greek, ranging in date from the first to the eighth century, and embracing every variety of subject. No site, with the probable exception of Arsinoë, has proved so fertile in this respect; and for the examination and editing of the papyri discovered much time will be required. For the present we are concerned with a single fragment, the remarkable character of which seemed to demand its prompt publication. The document in question is a leaf from a papyrus book containing a collection of Logia or Sayings of our Lord, of which some, though presenting several novel features, are familiar, while others are wholly new. (The Greek Papyri preserved at Didlington Hall form probab...)
The Greek Papyri preserved at Didlington Hall form probably the most important private collection of this kind which has yet been made. Though small in comparison with the vast numbers of papyri which have been acquired by many of the chief museums in Europe, Lord Amherst scollection possesses the rare distinction of being thoroughly representative of the different classes and periods of Greek writing in Egypt, since it contains a number of important theological and classical fragments besides many wellpreserved documents of the Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine times. With the exception of those described on page 66 of Mr. P. E. Newberry spublication of Lord Amherst s Egyptian papyri, the Greek papyri have been bought for Lord Amherst by us at various places in Egypt during the last three years. The present volume is limited to the theological texts, of which the two most important, the A scension of Isaiah and the Christian hymn, were only obtained in 1899. The classical fragments and the non-literary documents will form the subject of a second and much larger volume, which we hope, if the pressure of other engagements permits, to publish next year. We have to thank the Rev. Prof. R. H. Charles and Mr. C. H. Turner for much help in connexion with the A scension, and the Rev. F. E. Brightman for some valuable suggestions on the Christian hymn and liturgical fragments. 0BERNARD P. GRENFELL. ARTHUR S. HUNT. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
