He was born as Bernardino de Scapis in Runo, a frazione of Dumenza, near Lake Maggiore about 1480.
He trained under Giovan Stefano Scotto, although for others he was a pupil of Ambrogio Bergognone.
Little is known about his life. He painted in Milan and its environs, where the influence of Leonardo was then powerful, and was among those who studied and copied the master's works, but there is no evidence that he knew Leonardo personally. Among Luini's works are many frescoes, for which he is best known, and a number of easel paintings, such as Herodias, in the Louvre.
