She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Physiology 1951 from the University of Toronto, (1951) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology from McGill University (1954) under B. Delise Burns.
She is a specialist in neuroregeneration research. She did postgraduate work at University College London, followed by positions at McGill and at the Rockefeller University. In 1969, she became a faculty member in the Department of Physiology at Cornell University Medical College where she is now the Vincent and Brooke Astor Distinguished Professor in Neuroscience.
She has been a member of the Society for Neuroscience since its start and served as a member of its Council from 1972 to 1976, as treasurer from 1977 to 1980 and as president from 1985 to 1986.
