A successful political career as leader of Sweden’s main opposition party probably limited the quantity of his output. International trade was his main subject from his published dissertation of 1924 onwards, and Interregional and International Trade was his masterpiece. In this he developed Cassel’s simplified Walrasian equilibrium model in a manner similar to Heckscher’s 1919 article and produced what is nowadays known as the ‘Heckscher-Ohlin theorem’, which accounts for the commodity composition of international trade entirely by the relative factor endowments of countries.
He also made major contributions to theory of money, employment and economic fluctuations, though much of this work has not appeared in English.
In his application of the concept of aggregate demand, and his distinction between expected and realised saving and investment, Ohlin anticipated some aspects of Keynes’s General Theory. Professor of Economics, University Copenhagen, 1925-1930.
Professor, Stockholm School Economics Business, 1930-1965.
