Betty Griesbaum Birney was born on April 26, 1947, in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States. She is the daughter of Edgar J. and Ella (Mohrmann) Griesbaum.
From kindergarten through graduation, Birney attended school in Affton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Then she graduated from Webster College (now Webster University) in Webster Groves, Missouri, majoring in English.
Birney also attended the University of Missouri at Columbia from 1970 to 1971.
After working in advertising in St. Louis, Missouri and in Chicago, Illinois, Birney eventually moved to Southern California. First, she worked for Disneyland in the advertising department from 1977 to 1979. Then she worked at the Disney Studio in Burbank, where she was writing and producing television and radio commercials and theatrical trailers for everything from re-releases of "Cinderella" and "Fantasia" to "Tex" for another two years.
When the Disney Channel was started, she became a writer and story editor for Welcome to Pooh Corner. Currently, Birney works as a freelance children's book writer and television writer, working and living in Los Angeles.
Betty G. Birney is the author of numerous works for children appearing in a variety of formats, including conventional picture books and lift-the-flap books as well as live-action and animated television programs and interactive software such as The New Adventures of Madeleine, Doug, and Bobby’s World, as well as after-school specials and a television movie, Mary Christmas. However, her most recognisable work is the best-selling World According to Humphrey which won the Richard and Judy Children's Book Club.
Besides her numerous awards, Birney has also been inducted into the Affton School District Hall of Fame.
