Nelsen was first elected to the Assembly as a Republican in a special election in July of 1979. She became Minority Leader in 1987. Nelsen served as Administrator of the Food and Nutrition Service at the United States. Department of Agriculture in Washington, District of Columbia Nelsen served in that position until 1993.
