Owen received an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan. She was a student of Sanford Meisner. Owen portrayed Marilyn Munster, the pretty niece and only non-monster Munster regular character during the first season of The Munsters.
However, she disliked the role and only accepted out of contractual obligations to Universal Studios (who produced the sitcom for Columbia Broadcasting System).
After 13 episodes, Owen left the program and was replaced in the role by second portrayer Pat Priest. Beginning in 1971 she appeared for two years on Another World, after which she retired from television and chose to perform exclusively in live theatre.
She has frequently appeared with the Cambridge Theatre Company, which is the company at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, New New York
