(The stories and sketches of "Pen Pictures" I have written...)
The stories and sketches of "Pen Pictures" I have written as I did ''Pastoral Sketches" and "A Journey to Palestine," with a view to interest while benefiting the head and heart of the reader. In my judgment, it is my best literary work. At the same time, there is scarcely a chapter but has a moral or religious point, and so presented as to abide in the memory and affect life. Flashlight revelations of character, the law of conscience, the power of human influence, kindness to animals, consideration for children, pity for the unfortunate, and many other lessons of life taught in this volume. A number of the chapters are descriptive of actual adventures in the life of the writer, but still, in the narrative, an underlying purpose is felt. It lasting moral or spiritual truth conveyed. Some people need to have a good laugh, some crave the luxury of tears, and others ought to pray. We doubt not that these three classes will find all they want in the pages of this volume. - The Author

(The types and symbols of the Old Testament contain as dee...)
The types and symbols of the Old Testament contain as deep spiritual meaning as the parables of the New Testament, and the whole combine in the revelation of the great doctrines of Christianity. The perfect harmony existing between these two books unites them into one Book. The great doctrine of the Book, the doctrine toward which all other doctrines lead, and in which they all center, is the doctrine of holiness.

Excerpt from The Better Way When a young man once said to me, "I want all that God has for me, he might have added, and the best that God has for me and still Spoken the truth and that which would have been pleasing to God." That a child Of God Should hear of this superior grace and live on contentedly Without it, is a matter of amazement to the writer. The very rumor of such grace should agitate the heart, inflame the soul with longings, and set one to traveling in that direction.

This great collection of sermons and teachings highlight the fact of sin as juxtaposed against the reality of salvation. This is a message that is desperately needed in our world that leans heavily on hyper-grace and light-mindedness.

(It has pleased God to take three countries, and make them...)
It has pleased God to take three countries, and make them represent as many distinct states of the soul: Egypt, standing for the life of sin; the wilderness, illustrating, in the wandering of the Jews through its boundaries, that spiritual condition which is certain to result to the Christian who led up to his Kadesh Barnea refuses to go over into the fulness of salvation; while Canaan, with its "green fields beyond the swelling flood," is made to typify the blessed experience and life of holiness. This same Canaan is called by Isaiah the Land of Beulah.
