He was younger son of Rana Kirat Singh and successor of Rana Pohap Singh.

He was from Bamraulia gotra of Jats. Rana Bhagwant Singh was a cheerful and lively person. He helped and provided security to the British and Maratha refugees who came to Dholpur in 1857 war of independence.
He had no issue.
He adopted a boy Maharaj Singh and named him Kulender Singh. Kulender Singh was married with Basant Kaur, daughter of Maharaja Narender Singh of Patiala. Kulender Singh died young at the age of 28 prior to Rana Bhagwant Singh.
Kulender Singh had a son named Nihal Singh aged 5 at the time of his death.
Rana Bhagwant Singh was awarded Knight Grand Commander of the Star of India (cr1869) by the British government. He died on 9 February 1873.
His successor was Rana Nihal Singh.
