Tye received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in 1969. Two years later she earned her Master of Science degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Then in 1974, Tye was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Tye began her career as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1974. Three years later she took a position of an assistant professor, and associate professor in 1984 at Cornell University. Since 1991 Bik was a professor of molecular biology at the same university. Nowadays she works as a professor emeritus of molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University and a visiting professor at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Tye is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science and Genetic Society of America.
On June 25, 1971 Bik Tye married Henry Tye. They have two children.
