journalist author sportswriter
Bill Elliott was born on April 4, 1945, in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Elliott attended Victoria University of Manchester.
Elliott worked in Express Newspapers, from 1969 to 1995, in London, England, as a senior sports writer. Also, he worked at the Observer in 1996, at Today’s Golfer in 1988, and at Golf World in 1999, in London, as golf columnist.
There have been many influences on Elliott's writing, but probably the most significant was his junior school English teacher in Belfast, the redoubtable Miss Stansfield. His writing process involves lots of staring at a blank screen, followed by a desperate plunge onto the keyboard. Having been a sportswriter all his life, with a particular interest in and knowledge of golf, it naturally follows that Elliott writes about the good, old game.
Quotations: “I write partly because I enjoy the process, but mostly because I need to earn money."
On September 13, 1969, Elliott married Valerie Holt. They have two sons: Simon William Patrick and James Stuart.
